Visual Arts Tutoring.
Art University Portfolio Development.

Visual Arts Tutoring.

Would you like to explore your passion for Visual Arts?  If you are looking for 1:1 instruction to learn the fundamentals or stretch your mind to understand conceptual art or photography, how subjects and lighting are used as metaphors, I'd be happy to work with you. I am fluent in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Illustrator. Some key units I have taught are: one/two/three point perspective, ratios on human head, head to body ratios for figure drawing, drawing from life v from a gridded photo, creating logos, packaging design, posters with a focus on typeface, how to use a manual DSLR camera, a chemical darkroom/alternative processes such as cyanotypes, gum bichromate.

Building a Portfolio for Art Universities.

Have you ever wondered how to build a portfolio? Do you have the breadth, or conceptual focus of work needed? Have you shown your process? How should you sequence the work? How do you photograph the work with proper lighting & color balance?  I can help guide which pieces to use or give your suggestions/lessons to create works to then go into the portfolio and guide you to have a portfolio which stands out technically and conceptually in the crowd.

I have had many years of guiding students in this process. Students have ended up studying Film, Architecture, Photography, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design at University Arts London, Concordia, Rhode Island School of Design, New York University, Bournemouth University, Leeds Arts University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Pratt Institute, etc.

I am also available to guide students write essays to universities in the USA. I understand that the story about that student is the most important, whereas the application process in Europe is very different.

Art Therapy

Did you ever notice how calm you may feel or how aggressive your work can be? Art is a form of communication and whatever you are going through, it is  a chance to face it head on or let it go and be in a different place emotionally. I have been interested in the field of psychology since the 1990s. I have had students face their problems through their art: a parent moving to a different country; hence the family split, mental health issues and emotional neglect. Each time, the work has been intensely strong, original;  a self portrait of sorts and overwhelmingly the student was glad to have created the work as a form of therapy. Through Cognitive Coaching, I have helped students find the question that they want to answer through their art. This way, as it comes from the student, it is authentically theirs and there is 100% buy-in.

My Story

Paraguay. India. England. Switzerland. Mexico, USA. These are the places I have lived and either taught art, studied art or created art. As an international educator for nearly 20 years, and having taught at four international schools on three continents, I've worked with students from Kindergarten to adults. I have worked for most recently in the Zurich, Switzerland area teaching Upper School Visual Arts, including   AP and IB Visual Arts, Digital Photography, Digital Graphic Design, Foundations of Art, Studio Art including Drawing, Painting, Sculpture (clay, wire/wax).

Irony. I never took an Art class in high school, but here I find myself teaching it at that level. I really enjoy the way the teen mind works and how fluid they accept defeat and move on. Part of making art is failing. The process is just as important as the final product. I was intimidated by the Art teacher at my high school who was very loud. It was a very thoughtful university professor who who taught me that Art could be learned and that a teacher with a sensitivity, not only to the art tools, but to the students, could make a difference. Teaching is also in my blood. My father was and brother is a professor, and my mother a teacher. I find joy in the process of discovery and refinement of artwork and the student's ideas exciting. I hope you will join me to create or refine and guide you as you create your portfolio.

Availability & Price. I am available to meet online or in person if you are living in the Zurich area. I also travel frequently, so I might just be in your area! Price: 50 Swiss Francs per hour.

As my Art History professor once said, you know you are a good teacher if you also are learning from your students. With that, I look forward to teaching you but also learning from you.  Keri
